Get More Out of 2021: Merge your Values with Your Goals

Ana Mariel Aquino at Rumble Park, Richmond Hill, Ont.

You aren't alone in falling short of your New year resolutions. The University of Scranton's research suggests that just 8% of people achieve their New Year's goals, which means 92% of resolutions fail.

Whatever your reason might have been for falling short, this new lesson I am about sharing with you will help you thrive this year.

Humans are goal-oriented. This explains why there is so much rave on performance, measurement, accomplishments. When you are at the bottom of the ladder, i.e., unaccomplishment, underperformance, unfulfillment, you feel like your world isn't measuring up.

The truth is, you are not competing against anyone but yourself. You are your very own stumbling block, and you have to address it by understanding your values.

Your values are your fundamental belief that compass the decisions you make and the choices you make. Every organization has core values (specific values among the list of outlined values) to scale-up performance.

Your values come from the things you believe the most. Examples of core values are;

  • Integrity

  • Ability to delegate

  • Communication

  • Self-awareness

  • Gratitude

  • Learning agility

  • Influence

  • Empathy

  • Courage

  • Respect

Explore your values, narrow them to three (3). Call it your "Core Values."

  • Ask yourself for each New Year resolution I have set, how do I see myself practicing each value while executing the goals?

For example; If your goal is eating healthy and one of your core values is courage, you’d have to exercise courage by coming up with a healthy meal plan and courageously sticking to it. You wouldn’t want to fail yourself by falling short and eating junk. Remember you have 2 (two) other values watching you.

Doing this will;

  • Accelerate your growth.

  • Make you more accountable.

  • Enable you to practise your core values more often.

  • Enhance your accomplishments as you approach your goals with excitement.

Ever since I started practising this, I noticed how focused I have been and how much my happiness skyrocketed.

In my Define your purpose package, we explore how knowing your values can evoke unimaginable success. Take your shopping cart and visit my one-stop-shop.
