How to Face your Fears
To be frank I am scared about running this half marathon.
What frightens me the most is I havenāt done it before, I will feel terrible pain afterwards and wonāt be able to go about work, other activities that I must do and it scares meš
Reading this written excuse doesnāt make senseš¶. There is gain in pain and the gains out way the painš.
I need to flash forward into the future and ask myself āwill I be proud of myself if I donāt run this half marathon?ā
Excuses not only hinder us from our goals but makes us under-prepared for further life obstacles. Attacking one of your fears will give you the confidence to deal with the other fears in your life.
One month ago I ran 18k for 2hr 15min. Life got busy and I fell out of my training routine. Only to run 9k for 1hr 9min. Today, August 5th, I ran 10k for 1hr 7min. Phew. Still, I was nervous. Nervous I might not break my 10k record of 56min.
ONLY MEASURE THE GAIN BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT
I had to reframe how I am see it. If I donāt push my self to complete the distance regardless of my finish time, my capacity wont stretch. Every action made towards the goal gives me the right momentum and speed to accelerate forward.
In my previous post, I made mention on How to make your actions match your desires
What can fear do for you?
it tells you a lot about yourself
It highlights your weakness and also your strengths.
It forces you to prepare and look for ways to improve
How can you face your fears?
Below few activities from my original āface your fear the Majorpane wayā
1. Define your fear
Imagine its late at night and you are walking in the woods alone. You suddenly hear a sound of movement. Your heartbeat rise beyond controlšÆ. The noise gets louderšŖ, it seems to be running towards you. Only for the object to come out and it was a rabbit. How will you feel? I will laugh at myself š¤£š¤£š¤£
You need to shine a light on your fears by defining it.
Why am I truly afraid?
What is the true cause of my fear?
2. Approach your fear with a Learning Lensš:
Itās not really about winning or getting the task done. Rather, what you learnt while going through the task. The learning lens keeps anxiety out of the way, it makes you patient and attentive.
Start interacting with your fear. It could be one area or the other.
What is this fear teaching me about myself?
How can I prepare myself for this fear?
What happens if I donāt prepare?
What will happen if I donāt do the task?
How do I want to show up later?
3. Find a therapeutic activity that expands your capacityš§š½āāļø:
Running is that therapeutic activity I engage in that makes me face my fears. The more I engage in running, the more I can take on task formally and informally. I get to realize that for me to cover more kilometres, it means I can accomplish other goals with ease.
Mental toughness is something that is consciously developed by you. It is you using a different scenario to learn and build yourself.
4. Be open about your fear with trusted people:
There is boldness in being vulnerable. If you donāt speak, how will someone know you need help. Trusted people act as alias and spectatorsš. They cheer you whenever you are on the right track and they also caution you whenever you arenāt doing things right.

I am opening up to you because you are my spectator. Doing this place me on the right frame of mind not to disappoint myself and you also. I look into the lives of people who have run half marathon to convince myself that itās possible and doable.
Look for someone you can confide in?
As a life coach, I have to ensure that you achieve those audacious goals. I can work with you from conception to execution. You have the power and strength you need to get to the next level.
